the foremost reason why CEOs tenure are cut short is failure to manage change.
Change is a permanent feature of the marketplace and the rate of change continues to accelerate. The
onset of the 4IR and its many features, such as artificial intelligence, blockchain technology,
virtualization of work processes and other disruptions like pandemics have made leading in current times
even trickier than ever before. CEO of Ericsson, Hans Vestberg, 2012 statement that “Change will never
be this slow again” has fully come to light. To survive and grow in the long term, an organization’s
breath, depth and pace of learning must surpass the rate of change, otherwise declining market share and
irrelevance in the marketplace will come in through the front door. Leaders need to understand how to
navigate challenges, by adapting quickly to changes, and creating alignment in strategy, structure, and
systems to remain competitive.
